West Lockinge Farm - Tuesday 28th October 2008
This was our last Colts and Fillies Trip of 2008 and a very successful one at that. The weather held out and 20 Colts and Fillies as well as their parents came along for a great day at the hands Henrietta Knight.
Henrietta is best known for training triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate and Queen Mother Champion Chase winner, Edredon Bleu. Her husband Terry Biddlescombe who also runs the yard is equally well known and was champion jockey in 1965, 1966 and 1969.
The day started at the schooling field where we witnessed Ringaroses ridden by Timmy Murphy and Musical Chairs ridden by Catherine Atkinson tackle a series of jumps whilst Henrietta checked their technique and running. This really was a treat for the Colts and Fillies especially as they got to see both a top trainer and jockey in action.
Soon we were whisked back to the yard where we heard about the feeding, training and welfare of the horses. But it wasn’t long before we were on the move again, Henrietta took us up to her Loose Jumping school where we saw Alexander Beetle jump loose with expert assistance from some of the staff at West Lockinge Farm.
After a trip to the gallops we returned to the farm for a short talk and question and answer session with Henrietta and Terry. There was also a children’s activity trail going throughout the morning and Henrietta gave prizes to the most observant children. What we did learn though is that everything is green as it is Henrietta’s lucky colour!
It was a great morning out for all who came and we hope the children already booked on our National Stud trip will have as good a time as we all had.
*Please note that the National Stud visit is now full.
